Kerala Green Cardamom or Alleppey Green Cardamom is known for its quality. It is considered to be the best grade of Cardamom produced in the world. Even the world’s largest cardamom exporter – Guatemala, received its initial plants from South India, from the German coffee planter Oscar Majus Klöffer.
The roots of the best variety cardamoms still lie in the Southern side of the Western Ghats, i.e Kerala. Cardamom comes from the seeds of several different plants that belong to the same family as ginger. It has a distinctive flavour that complements both sweet and savoury dishes. Cardamom seeds and pods are used in main food dishes, desserts, meat dishes, and also in beverages, such as coffee and chai tea. Cardamom is also taken as a supplement for its health benefits. Cardamom contains phytochemicals that have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
Researchers have conducted several studies on cardamom, the findings of which suggest that it has some health benefits. Although these studies are promising, large and controlled human studies are necessary before healthcare professionals can recommend cardamom to treat medical problems.
